Protecting Our Environment

 

Conventional lights such as Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) are filled with a gas containing low-pressure mercury vapor and argon. When a fluorescent light breaks, its toxic mercury vapors escape into the air and can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin.

In addition, the toxic-nature of the mercury will eventually contribute to the global air and water pollution when all the used CFL are disposed into the landfill, at which the mercury waste move into the atmosphere and various water sources.

It is noted that it only takes 4mg of mercury to contaminate up to 7,000 gallons of freshwater

 
     
 

Another area of environmental concern is the rapid expansion of the global carbon footprint, which is in part generated from the growing consumption of electricity in the face of the fast-paced global urbanization.

According to the US Department of Energy, a single kilowatt-hour of electricity will generate 1.34 pounds (610 g) of CO2 emissions. Assuming that an average light bulb operates for 10 hours a day, a single 40-watt incandescent bulb will generate 196 pounds (89 kg) of CO2 every year. A 13-watt LED, an equivalent of the 40-watt incandescent, will produce only 63 pounds (29 kg) of CO2 over the same period of time.

In summary, LEDs are more environmentally friendly as they do not contain toxic elements such as mercury, and they are able to reduce carbon footprint through lesser consumption of electrical power.
